Eye Doctors: "Save Money By Funding Eye Care"

The medical journal Ophthalmology has published a study suggesting that people with poor and deteriorating vision are more prone to non-eye related illnesses and injuries. The study found that Medicare is spending nearly 2 billion dollars a year on meeting non-eye-related healthcare needs that result from poor vision. In light of this study, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is calling on Medicare and private insurers to increase funding for preventive eye care.

“With the soaring costs of health care, this study is an important reminder that preventing vision loss saves both sight and money,” said American Academy of Ophthalmology executive vice president H. Dunbar Hoskins, MD.
