Putting a Price Tag on Medical Services

Late this summer Aetna, one of the country’s leading insurance providers, launched a landmark new program that puts a price on 600 different services offered by over 5,000 doctors.

This is great news for Aetna members in Cincinnati, Dayton and Springfield, OH, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana, where the program is being piloted.

The availability of this information through Aetna’s website gives members a backstage pass to the pricing of doctor’s visits, testing and minor procedures. Now they can research at their leisure and weigh costs before they essentially ‘purchase’ the medical care by seeking treatment.

Aetna is currently testing the new program with the hopes to expand to new markets. And if the program proves successful with consumers, perhaps other major insurance companies will follow suit.
