California Program For Low-Cost Auto Insurance Soon To Be Statewide
California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner announced he will expand the auto insurance program for low-income residents to include every county in the state. Currently, 42 counties in California are included in the program — the expansion will add the remaining 16.
To qualify for the program, residents need to demonstrate they are good drivers, must have an annual income of no more than 250% of the federal poverty level, and the value of the insured car cannot exceed $20,000.
“More than 3 million motorists travel California’s roads without auto insurance,” says Mr. Poizner. “This is a recipe for disaster. This program is an affordable option for qualified low-income drivers.”
The 16 final counties to be added are: Alpine, Colusa, Del Norte, Glenn, Inyo, Lassen, Mariposa, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Plumas, San Luis Obispo, Sierra, Siskiyou, Tehama, and Trinity.
