Michael Moore Heats Up Healthcare Debate With “Sicko”
Sicko, the new documentary form controversial filmmaker Michael Moore, is a scathing criticism of the U.S. healthcare system. Moore claims that the U.S. system is lagging far behind many other countries around the world.
“[The U.S. healthcare system is] the biggest sicko we’ve got in this country,” said Moore said at a news conference on Capitol Hill.
Moore, who wrote and directed such documentaries as Bowling For Columbine and Fahrenheit 9/11, favors of a single-payer system. In a single-payer system, the Federal government would provide free or low-cost healthcare. He argues that the current system leaves too many Americans without coverage for needed medical care.
One possible single-payer model is the Canadian healthcare system. Canada provides free healthcare for every one of its citizens. But critics point out that Canada’s system has its share of problems — including long waits for care, and a lackluster performance in the development of new, innovative medical treatments.
Even so, many people agree that the current healthcare system in the U.S. is broken and needs reform.
