Houston Independent School District To Insure More Children

The Houston Independent School District (HISD), the Children’s Defense Fund, local hospitals, and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation are working together to enroll uninsured children who are eligible for the state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) or Medicaid.

An estimated 1.4 children in Texas are eligible for one of the state- or Federally-funded healthcare programs but aren’t enrolled. The campaign, informally called the 100% Campaign, has a goal to sign up every eligible child in the state.

To find these children, they have come to an agreement with the HISD school board to add an insurance status question on the enrollment form. Then trained employees will go through the forms and automatically enroll eligible children in CHIP or Medicaid.

Many are excited about the new program because it could be an efficient and low-cost model to find and enroll children who can get CHIP or Medicaid coverage.

“There’s no reason why these students shouldn’t be able to indicate on one enrollment form that they’re eligible for school lunches and health insurance,” wrote the Houston Chronicle.
