$300 Billion Plan For The Uninsured

Private insurance companies have proposed a plan that would provide medical coverage for all uninsured children in the United States. The $300 billion plan would be rolled out over the next 3 years. It has been welcomed by the American Medical Association and looks to have the support from government lawmakers.

The plan would also provide insurance for uninsured adults as well. The plan’s designers hope to cover as many as 95% of the uninsured adult population within 10 years.

“This bold program would expand coverage to tens of millions within a framework that is fiscally sound and promotes individual responsibility,” said J. Grover Thomas Jr., board chairman of America’s Health Insurance Plans.

Mainly, the plan will offer tax breaks for the working poor to go towards universal health accounts. Uninsured individuals will be able to save up to $2,000 per year and families can save up to $4,000. Families will also get a $500 tax credit when they get health insurance for their children.

“The fact that even the health insurance industry is talking reform shows a growing consensus that reform is really needed,” said Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy.
