Long Term Care Patients Younger Than You Think
Unum Provident, one of America’s largest insurance carriers, has reported that almost 58% of long term care insurance claims were made by people under the age of 65.
Among people under the age of 65 who filed a long term care claim, the average age was 53. 15% of them 45 or younger.
The leading cause long term care claims among adults younger than 65 is cancer. Other leading causes include strokes, dementia, multiple sclerosis, and neurological diseases.
The Unum Provident report challenges the long-held assumption that long term care insurance is something only retirees have to consider.
“When you say ‘long term care,’ most people think of a nursing home for end-of-life care. Our claims analysis shows that both group and individual long term care is frequently used at much younger ages. This annual look… will allow us to educate employers on the growing importance of this emerging benefit,” explained John Noble, director of long term care products.
