Breaking the Law: Driving Without Auto Insurance
Buying a new car? Don’t forget to pick up a new auto policy to go along with it. Liability insurance is the law in 47 states, according to the Insurance Information Institute.
Liability insurance is a basic type of auto insurance that covers damage to property and bodily harm that results from a car accident.
It might not feel like you’re breaking the law, but being caught driving without the minimum required liability insurance is a punishable offence in the majority of the country.
Each state has their own penalties for uninsured drivers. According to the III, some of these include: revoking or suspending your driver’s license, fines, and even jail time and revoking license plates for repeat offenders. Four states have even used checkpoints to catch uninsured drivers and raise awareness of the law.
