A Creative Approach to Auto Insurance Fraud
Insurance fraud – particularly auto – is a big problem in the U.S., one that frustrates insurers and forces them to raise everyone’s rates.
And even as the government increases its efforts to stamp out fraud, people keep finding new ways to scam money from auto insurers.
Take Matthew Mueller for example. When faced with costly repairs to his BMW, the Akron, Ohio resident decided he didn’t want to pay up – so he buried the car.
And his plan worked – at first. Insurers coughed up $20,000 to cover the loss of the “stolen” vehicle. It wasn’t until a year later, when a nervous Mueller made an aborted attempt to dig up the Beemer, that authorities finally nabbed him.
Mueller didn’t win any sympathy from the court when sentenced this January. In addition to paying restitution, he was sentenced to one year in prison.
