Should I Go With COBRA or With an Individual Health Plan?
There’s no simple way to answer that question.
If you’re in generally good health you may be able to find a better deal
than COBRA offers. But, if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, going
with a COBRA plan may be your best option.
With COBRA, insurance companies aren’t allowed to change your coverage,
or reject or raise your rates because of a pre-existing medical condition.
Also, the doctors, clinics and hospitals offered by your current plan will
be the same.
But COBRA will only last for 18 months, so you will need to start looking
for an alternative as soon as possible.
If you find a new job before your COBRA coverage runs out, that would be the
best possible solution – but if you can’t get employer-sponsored
coverage, you'll need to start shopping around for a decent deal on an individual
health insurance plan. |
