What Won't COBRA Cover?
While it does offer some coverage for just about everything else, your COBRA
coverage won’t include life or disability benefits. Your former employer
might offer you the opportunity to continue for life and disability continuance
coverage.
But, if they aren’t able to, you may be eligible for free disability
coverage through your state—unfortunately, most state sponsored plans
tend to pay less than individual or group sponsored benefit plans.
The same state office that administers unemployment benefits more often than
not also administers disability insurance benefits. The Federal Social Security
Administration also offers a disability benefit. Social Security Administration
sponsored disability benefits are fairly limited, and take a year to qualify
for in most cases. |
