Will a Preexisting Condition Affect My Chances of a Low-Cost
Health Plan?
If you have a pre-existing medical condition and you aren’t eligible
for an employer sponsored group health plan, finding an affordable health plan
won’t be easy, but you will have a few options.
Here Are a Few Options You May Want to Look Into:
- Find an "assigned risk" or "open enrollment" health
plan. These plans are usually available to anyone, but you may
have a waiting period before one will begin to cover your pre-existing
condition.
- Find a PPO Discount Plan. PPO discount plans offer coverage
for pre-existing medical conditions and best of all, they’re available
to just about anyone. They aren’t true insurance plans, but they will
help reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
- Find out if you’re eligible for a Health Savings or Health
Reimbursement Account (HSA or HRA). Like the discount plans above,
these aren’t actually insurance policies. They are designed to cover
pre-existing medical conditions but your benefits may be limited to amounts
defined by your employer. HSA Accounts are sometimes combined with PPO
Discount Plan in order to cover the out of pocket portion of the bills
that aren’t paid by the discount plan.
