How Long After I’m Approved Will My Health Insurance Take Effect?
If your only experience with the insurance industry has been buying a home
or an auto policy that was “in force pending approval” as soon
as you signed on the dotted line, it may come as surprise to hear that Health
Insurance doesn’t work that way. For a variety of reasons, health insurance
plans don’t offer you immediate coverage. Healthcare carriers put your
application for coverage through an underwriting process that needs to be approved
before your health plan can take effect.
This works in a variety of ways. With certain healthcare plans, your coverage
can only begin on the first of the month—with other plans you’ll
be able to request a specific “effective date” (or date your coverage
begins) on or after the date you complete your policy application. As a rule
of thumb, it’s safe to assume that you’re only covered after you’ve
received a policy from your health insurance carrier. |
