Many people dream of taking a trip to a far-off country. And anyone who’s ever been abroad will tell you there is something magical about stepping onto an airplane, spending a few hours above the clouds, and setting down in a place you’ve never seen before.
Not to spoil the magic… but before you pack your bags, you’ll need to make sure your health will be protected while you’re traveling.

Most people who travel to another country don’t give a second thought to their health insurance. And most people don’t know that their health insurance policy doesn’t always cover them while they’re outside the United States.
There are two things you may need if you get sick or injured in another country: immediate medical care, and a fast ride back to the United States. These two services are covered by two kinds of travel insurance policies:
Accident/Illness expense coverage will pay the bills if you get sick or hurt while traveling.
Medical evacuation coverage will pay for an emergency flight back to the United States. According to the U.S. State Department, a flight in one of these “Air Ambulances” can cost over $10,000.
There are also policies designed for students studying in foreign countries. Since students tend to go abroad for longer than your average traveler, they need insurance coverage that stays in effect for months at a time.
Just what you needed… another expense tacked on to your trip.
Fortunately, travel health insurance doesn’t have to cost too much. Like everything else in the insurance world, the price tag on your policy is determined by risk. Most people take relatively short trips, so the chances of getting hurt or sick while out of the country are low. That means you won’t pay too much for coverage. But if you travel to a part of the world that’s prone to conflict or contagious diseases, you can expect to pay more for your policy.
