PPO plans are a managed care option. Like HMOs, a PPO plan provides you with a network of doctors, hospitals, and other healthcare providers to choose from.

What makes a PPO different? In a PPO plan, you have more flexibility when you receive healthcare.

The Advantages of PPO Plans

When you enroll in a PPO, your insurance company will give you a list of doctors and hospitals that make up the plan network. To participate in the network, these doctors and hospitals offer their services at a discount — often charging as little as half as much as what they would normally charge for a service.

Some managed care plans — notably HMOs — require you to see an “in-network” provider in order to receive coverage. But with a PPO, you can visit any doctor or hospital you choose.

It costs the PPO plan less when you use their network. So they make it worth your while to see their pre-approved doctors and hospitals. Your copayments are generally much lower for in-network care. And many PPO plans “waive the deductible” for routine care received from one of their doctors — meaning your coverage starts right away, leaving you with just a small copayment to make.

By joining a PPO health plan, you end up with more choice. If your doctor doesn’t participate in a health plan, having a PPO means you won’t have to change doctors — or go without coverage.
