Medicare Supplement plans fill in the gaps in your Medicare coverage. While Medicare will pay a large part of your healthcare expenses, it only pays for services it determines medically necessary — and only in the amount it determines to be reasonable. As a result, many individuals turn to their savings or retirement funds to pay those extra medical bills.

Medicare Supplement — also called “Medigap” — will cover most of Medicare’s coinsurance fees and deductibles. Your Medicare Supplement plan may cover services and expenses (such as hospital bills) only partially covered by Medicare.

Things You Need to Know About Medigap

Here are some helpful facts about buying a Medicare Supplement policy.

  • The best time to purchase a “Medigap” plan will be during your Medicare open enrollment period, when companies must sell you any plan they offer without regard to pre-existing conditions.
  • If you don’t buy a Medigap policy during your open enrollment period you may not be able to buy the one you want later.
  • Under federal law, only 10 standardized plans can be offered as Medigap plans. All 10 must cover certain services, no matter which state you live in. Medigap policies pay most, if not all, Medicare coinsurance amounts. Some also provide coverage for deductibles and services not covered by Medicare such as prescription drugs and preventive care.
  • Each Medigap policy is labeled with the letter “A” through “J.” Plan “A” is the basic benefit plan, while Plan “J” offers the most coverage. However, it is important to note that not all 10 plans are available in every state.
  • Consider factors other than price. You can learn a company’s complaint record and American Medical Association rating. Both are important indicators of the service you can expect.
