The regular Medicare program — officially known as Medicare Part A and Part B — covers you for doctor and hospital bills. But Medicare doesn’t cover all your doctor and hospital expenses. A Medicare supplement plan will pick up the costs that regular Medicare won’t — including your copayments and deductible. Because it covers the gaps in your Medicare plan, the supplement plans are often called “Medigap.”
But Medicare supplement plans are too expensive for some seniors’ budgets. Medicare SELECT plans were introduced to make the extra coverage affordable.
Medicare SELECT works like a managed care health plan. Instead of having coverage for certain health services, you have coverage for certain health providers. In other words, you receive care from a pre-approved network of doctors and hospitals.
This pre-approved network is why Medicare SELECT plans cost less than regular supplement plans. By negotiating prices with this network, the Medicare SELECT plans are able to keep their costs down. Those savings are passed on to you, making the plans an affordable alternative to traditional supplement plans.
The downside is that you have fewer options for receiving care. Your current doctor may not be a member of a Medicare SELECT network. How comfortable are you with the idea of changing doctors? If you wouldn’t mind, the savings can be worth it. If you like your current doctor, you may want to look into a traditional Medicare supplement plan.
