Many seniors rely on Medicare. But Medicare doesn’t cover many of the costs of care. A Medicare Advantage plan is an affordable way to fill in the gaps in your regular Medicare coverage.

Medicare Advantage is a set of privately-run health insurance plans for Medicare beneficiaries. They offer the same coverage as Medicare Part A and Part B, along with extra benefits. These extra benefits often include more generous coverage for medical bills and prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Advantage plans were created in 1997 as an attempt to lower costs and increase benefits for Medicare beneficiaries. By opening Medicare coverage to private insurance companies, the government hoped that market competition would drive down the program’s healthcare costs.

What You Should Know About Medicare Advantage

Before choosing a Medicare Advantage plan, there are several important points to consider:

  • You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B.
  • You will be responsible for paying your Medicare Part B premiums. You’ll make this payment directly to Medicare, not to the provider of your Advantage plan.
  • You may have additional premiums to pay. If your Advantage plan offers additional coverage, you may have to pay extra for it.
  • Your Medicare Supplement plan will no longer offer coverage. Even though you have the legal right to keep your Medicare Supplement plan, it will no longer cover your Medicare deductible or copayments.

Medicare Advantage plans come in several varieties. Managed care options, including HMO and PPO plans, are the most common.
