GEICO Auto Insurance
For years, the auto insurance industry was dominated by a few large companies. Then, almost out of nowhere, commercials featuring a talking lizard appeared all over television and announced the arrival of a new player. GEICO promised to make buying car insurance easy. And even better, they told us we could save money.
Even though they seemed to appear suddenly, GEICO has been in business since 1936. Started as the Government Employees Insurance Company, GEICO originally served Federal workers and military officers. Within a year of starting the company, GEICO had 12 employees and had issued 3,700 insurance policies.
Today, GEICO has 20,000 employees. It has more than 7 million policyholders, and insures more than 12 million vehicles. As of 1996, GEICO is part of the Berkshire Hathaway company.
