The Many Companies Of Blue Shield

Though they share a name and logo, there are actually 39 companies that make up the Blue Shield network. Most of these companies operate regionally — like Blue Shield of California, for example. But some — like Anthem Blue Cross Blue and Blue Shield — operate in several states.

Blue Shield started out in Washington state in 1917. Mining and lumber camps struck up agreements with local doctors to receive access to care in exchange for monthly fees — known in the insurance world as premiums. One of the first of these plans was called the Pierce County Medical Bureau. Today, the company is called Regence Blue Shield.

In 1948, nine separate insurance plans joined together as the Associated Medical Care Plans, and took the blue shield as their logo. The organization later renamed itself the National Association of Blue Shield Plans. In 1982, it merged with Blue Cross, becoming the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
