Blue Cross isn’t one single company. 44 companies use the Blue Cross name and logo. These companies are independent, and most of them operate regionally. For example, Blue Cross of California only serves residents of that state. All the Blue Cross companies are members of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. Blue Cross started as a health insurance plan for teachers at Baylor University in 1929.
